Placeholder is a type of reverb that sits somewhere between the mechanical and algorithmic devices of years gone by, creating uncanny liminal spaces reminiscent of a time that never was and a time that is now. This is not a delay that sounds like a reverb, but a reverb that sometimes sounds like a delay.

The signal path is entirely analogue, bringing with it the noise, imperfections, and character that make these systems so compelling.

At its core, Placeholder is an analogue implementation of a digital reverb algorithm, built using BBDs, mixers, VCAs, and simple but carefully tuned filters. The underlying topology, known as Householder, allows for rapid echo density using only three delay lines.

While algorithmic representations increasingly shape everyday life, the complex systems underlying lived experience remain full of uncertainty, variation, and background noise. Placeholder embraces that tension.
